Transportation Options within Downtown Buffalo
Downtown Buffalo is served by a light rail system called
Metro Rail. The trains operate
above ground along the mall in Downtown Buffalo, and there is no charge to ride the
train between the following stops (Fare Free Zone): Theater, Fountain Plaza, Lafayette
Square, Church, Seneca, Auditorium, and Special Events Station. The trains go
underground between the Theater and Allen-Hospital stops, and remain underground until
they terminate at the South Campus station. You must pay a fare of $1.50 for a
one-way ticket between all underground stations.
Metro Rail features self-service fare collection. There are no turnstiles or ticket
takers, but you must carry proof that you paid your fare. This is called "proof of
payment."
Metro Rail tickets are sold by vending machines at all Metro Rail stations.
One-way tickets are good for one ride in one direction within one hour of purchase
and on connecting buses. Round trip tickets are good for one trip in each direction
any time of the day of purchase, but are not valid on buses except on Route #8 after
6:00 pm on Sunday and Holidays.
"Proof-of-payment" can be your bus transfer, your monthly Metro-Pass or your ticket.
Tickets may be purchased from vending machines at any station, but be sure to purchase
one before you board the train.
At some time during your ride, you may be asked to show your proof of payment to a
Metro Ticket Inspector. If you do not have it, you'll be issued a summons, similar to
that given for a parking violation. To avoid unnecessary expense, remember to purchase
a ticket, or have your transfer or pass handy before you ride.
